The Google Pixel 8a has arrived, and it feels like a comfortable reunion with a friend who's been on a self-improvement journey. With a familiar, improved design language and a few new tricks up its sleeve, the Pixel 8a aims to deliver the core Pixel experience at a more accessible price point.
Design and display
The Pixel 8a maintains the classic Pixel aesthetic, with a sleek design and a 6.1-inch Actua display. I'm especially a fan of its satiny matte-back finish. While it may not be pushing boundaries in the display department — we have seen this design for three years — the screen is bright, clear, and perfectly functional for everyday use.
Performance and software
Under the hood, the Pixel 8a is powered by the Google Tensor G3 chip, the same processor found in its flagship siblings, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. This means you can expect smooth performance, efficient multitasking, and access to the latest AI-powered features. The phone runs Android 14, offering a clean and intuitive software experience.
Camera capabilities
Pixel phones have always been known for their exceptional camera performance, and the Pixel 8a continues this tradition. The dual rear camera system — a 64MP primary shooter and a 13MP ultrawide snapper — captures stunning photos in various lighting conditions. Google's computational photography prowess shines through, with features like Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Night Sight delivering impressive results.

Battery life
The Pixel 8a boasts a respectable battery life that should easily get you through a full day of moderate to heavy use. In my limited experience so far, Google's adaptive battery technology helps optimise power consumption, ensuring you don't run out of juice when you need it most.
Initial verdict
The Google Pixel 8a may not be a revolutionary device, but it doesn't need to be. It delivers a solid all-around experience with a focus on the features that matter most to users: Performance, camera capabilities, and software.
If you're looking for a reliable, user-friendly smartphone with a great camera and the latest Android features, the Pixel 8a is a compelling option, if you can swallow the over-₹50k price tag. It may not have all the bells and whistles of the flagship Pixel models, but it offers exceptional value.
