Jet Airways’ former CEO raps Anand Mahindra for comparing Dubai flashfloods to Mumbai: ‘Incorrect analogy’

Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra Group, on Wednesday shared a video of Dubai floods and compared its situation with Mumbai. However, it did not go down well for a section of social media users, including Jet Airways’ former CEO Sanjiv Kapoor.

Sharing a video of waterlogged roads in Dubai following intense rain, Mahindra wrote, “Nope. Not Mumbai. Dubai.”

Responding to the post, Sanjiv Kapoor shared a ‘better’ analogy and wrote, “Incorrect analogy. Dubai was not built for such heavy rains – rains that would flood most cities. A better analogy would be if it suddenly snowed heavily in Bombay, which was obviously not built to handle snow at all. Would people in snowy Oslo mock Bombay?”

Clarifying his response to Mahindra’s post, Kapoor further wrote, “Ok, upon re-reading the post, maybe it is not mocking Dubai. However the point remains Dubai was not built for heavy rains, no matter what the source of the rain (seeding etc). It would be impractical to build cities to handle any extreme weather scenario, however unlikely.”

Kapoor’s post triggered a chat about climate conditions on social media with many users slamming him for his analogy, while others agreed to it. Reacting to it, a user wrote, “It rains regularly in Dubai, they also cloud seed rains.. it has never and probably never snow in Mumbai. So yeah, the analogy you’re giving is wrong, not @anandmahindra.”

Another user commented, “100% correct. Dubai is experiencing rains only for a couple of years. The City wasn’t made for it. They created so much out of a desert, they would have made an enviable system to deal with rains and floods too had it been known. So much to learn from them.”

Heavy rain battered the United Arab Emirates causing flash floods in Dubai leading to temporary flight diversions from one of the world’s busiest airports on Tuesday.

The rains started on Monday, turning roads into rivers and submerging cars and houses. Videos also emerged from the airport showing jets floating around. The National Centre of Meteorology recorded 254 mm of rainfall in less than 24 hrs in the “Khatm Al Shakla” area in Al Ain, The Khaleej Times reported.

Early on Wednesday, countless videos of flooded Dubai shopping malls and international airport took over social media. A video of Bigg Boss 14 contestant Rahul Vaidya trapped in the flood and walking towards a safe place caught the internet’s attention.
