Google Chrome users on Windows, Mac, and Linux are urged to update their web browser immediately following the discovery of critical security vulnerabilities. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team ( CERT-In ) issued a high-severity warning (CIVN-2024-0136) detailing multiple vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to remotely hijack devices and crash systems.

What are these vulnerabilities?

The vulnerabilities reside in various components of Google Chrome, including the JavaScript engine (V8), WebAssembly processing, and memory management. These weaknesses could be exploited by attackers to potentially execute malicious code on your computer or crash the browser entirely, rendering it unusable (Denial-of-Service attack).

How can attackers exploit them?

According to the advisory, attackers could lure unsuspecting users into visiting a specially crafted website laced with malicious code. Once a user visits such a webpage, the vulnerabilities could be triggered, potentially compromising the system.

Who is affected?

All Google Chrome users on Windows, Mac, and Linux are at risk if they are not running the latest version (version 124.0.6367.60 or higher for Windows and Mac, and 124.0.6367.60 for Linux).

What should you do?

It is crucial to update your Google Chrome browser as soon as possible. Here's how to do it:

Open Google Chrome. Click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the browser window. Go to "Settings" and then "Help." Under "About Chrome," click "Check for updates." If an update is available, it will download and install automatically. Once the update is complete, restart your browser to ensure the changes take effect.

By updating your browser promptly, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to these critical vulnerabilities. Remember, keeping your software updated is essential for maintaining a secure browsing experience.
