Stock Market Holidays July 2024: In July 2024, both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will be closed for a single day. In particular, on July 17, both exchanges will be closed in observance of Muharram. The BSE has issued a notification on the suspension of trade in the following sectors: equity, equity derivatives, SLB, currency derivatives, and interest rate derivatives on this day.
The NSE facilitates trading all year round in order to offer a perfect trading experience. A trader's window is six hours and fifteen minutes, from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., during regular weekday trading hours. Notably, the stocks, equity derivative, and SLB categories all observe trade holidays on Saturdays and Sundays, during which no trading occurs.
The NSE holiday calendar covers certain national and cultural observances in addition to weekends. The NSE will likewise be closed on July 17, 2024, in observance of Muharram.
What is Muharram?
The Shia Muslim community mourns the death of Hussain Ibn Ali, Ali's son and Prophet Muhammad's grandson, in the Karbala battle. Karbala is a popular pilgrimage site in Iraq. Hussain Ibn Ali was murdered at Karbala in 680 AD. He battled till the end against Yazid I's troops and was eventually slain in combat. The 10th of Muharram, the Day of Ashura, commemorates Hussain's courageous sacrifice.
