Although Apple’s customers had mixed feelings about its viability and capabilities, reviewers were gung ho about the Apple Vision Pro and the potential the headset had. A doctor, based out of Chennai, India is now showing why.

Surgeons at GEM Hospital in Chennai are now using the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headsets to perform laparoscopic surgeries, including procedures for gall bladder issues, stomach cancer, fistulas, and hernias.

Dr R Parthasarathy, a surgical gastroenterologist and COO of GEM Hospitals highlighted the significant advantages brought by these high-tech devices, making keyhole surgeries much easier.

Dr Parthasarathy explained that the headset provides real-time transmission without delays. It offers enhanced vision and connectivity to the real world, allowing surgeons to view laparoscopic surgery footage as well as CT scans simultaneously. The device also allows for detailed examination of internal organs, with the ability to enlarge views to the size of a wall. So far, Dr Parthasarathy has used the Apple Vision Pro in over 30 surgeries and plans on using it, wherever necessary.

Moreover, Dr Parthasarathy emphasized the ergonomic benefits of the Apple Vision Pro headset. Surgeons can seamlessly seek expert opinions during surgery and even teach via FaceTime. More importantly, though, the headset helps prevent neck pain during prolonged surgeries, he said

While discussing the practical application of technology in daily operations, Dr Parthasarathy highlighted the limitations of traditional surgical monitors. With Apple’s headset, surgeons can keep multiple tabs open and view various data, including CT scans and MRI scans, simultaneously, without needing to turn towards a single monitor.

Laparoscopic surgeries involve making small incisions in the abdomen and inserting a camera-like tube to provide real-time visuals. This internal view is typically displayed on a monitor for surgeons to conduct operations.

In the UK, surgeons used the Apple Vision Pro headset in a spine operation, supported by an app from eXeX. This combination enabled real-time data streaming, aided surgical preparation, and assisted in selecting instruments. By potentially reducing human errors and enhancing surgical confidence, this technology could revolutionize spine surgeries.
